Scientific literature on semax is unevenly distributed. A substantial share of published work originates from a small number of laboratories in Russia, while independent replication elsewhere is limited. Human data consist mostly of small trials with short follow-up, and several reported outcomes rely on subjective rating scales. Questions about how much intact peptide reaches the central nervous system after nasal administration, and how long it persists there, are still unresolved. The compound is best described as an active research subject rather than a settled pharmacological agent.
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. It was derived from the ACTH(4-10) fragment, a short segment of adrenocorticotropic hormone that lacks the hormonal activity associated with the full-length peptide. Researchers at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow developed the compound during the 1980s. It has been registered as a pharmaceutical product in Russia and several neighbouring countries, where it is supplied as a nasal solution, and it is also sold internationally as a research chemical.
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. It is described in the literature as an analogue of the ACTH(4–10) fragment, a short N-terminal portion of adrenocorticotropic hormone that retains some neurotropic activity without the full hormonal effects of the parent peptide. The molecule carries a methionine residue at the N-terminus and two proline residues near the C-terminus, features that shape both its interactions with receptor systems and its chemical stability. The free peptide corresponds to the formula C37H51N9O10S and a molecular mass near 813.9 Da.
The compound was developed in the 1980s at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow, where it emerged from research on short ACTH fragments and their effects on the central nervous system. Russian pharmaceutical listings describe it as a nootropic and neuroprotective agent, most often formulated as nasal drops. It is not a marketed medicine in the United States or the European Union, and no pharmacopoeial monograph covers it. Consequently, most published clinical experience with the substance originates from a small number of research centres, mainly in Russia and neighbouring countries.
Pharmacological accounts link semax to melanocortin signalling and to modulation of neurotrophic factor expression, particularly brain-derived neurotrophic factor and nerve growth factor. Much of this evidence comes from rodent studies using intranasal delivery, a route chosen because it allows peptides to reach the central nervous system with limited systemic exposure. Whether the same mechanisms operate in humans at comparable magnitude remains an open question. The precise receptor or receptors responsible for the reported behavioural and neuroprotective effects have not been conclusively identified.

Development of the compound took place in the Soviet Union during the 1980s, largely through peptide research groups affiliated with the Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute and Moscow State University. Investigators screened fragments of adrenocorticotropic hormone for activity on the central nervous system while attempting to separate cognitive effects from hormonal ones. The shortened sequence was selected because it retained behavioral activity in animal models without stimulating corticosteroid release. Early publications described the molecule as an ACTH(4-10) analog.
Published research on this peptide originates mainly from Russian laboratories, and the wider international literature is comparatively thin. Studies have used rodent models of stroke, hypoxia, and memory tasks, with a smaller number of human trials reported. Reported outcomes include changes in attention and memory measures, along with effects on neurotrophic factor expression in some experiments. Small sample sizes, inconsistent dosing protocols, and limited independent replication are widely noted limitations, so the strength of the clinical evidence remains an open question.
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide whose sequence is Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. The first four residues correspond to the ACTH(4-10) fragment, while the terminal Pro-Gly-Pro extension was added to improve metabolic stability. Its molecular formula is C37H51N9O10S and its monoisotopic mass is approximately 813.9 Da. The compound is classified as a peptide research chemical and as a registered pharmaceutical product in Russia, but it does not hold marketing approval in the European Union or the United States. Naming conventions vary across supplier catalogs.
== Uses == PET is both a medical and research tool used in pre-clinical and clinical settings. It is used heavily in the imaging of tumors and the search for metastases within the field of clinical oncology, and for the clinical diagnosis of certain diffuse brain diseases such as those causing various types of dementias. PET is valued as a research tool to learn and enhance knowledge of the normal human brain, heart function, and support drug development. PET is also used in pre-clinical studies using animals. It allows repeated investigations into the same subjects over time, where subjects can act as their own control and substantially reduces the numbers of animals required for a given study. This approach allows research studies to reduce the sample size needed while increasing the statistical quality of its results. Physiological processes result in anatomical changes within the body. Because PET can detect biochemical activity and the expression of certain proteins, it can provide molecular-level information long before any anatomical alterations become visible. PET achieves this by using radiolabelled molecular probes, which are taken up at varying rates depending on the tissue. Regional tracer uptake in different anatomical structures can then be visualized and approximately quantified based on the amount of injected positron-emitting tracer detected in the scan, via metrics like the standardized uptake value. It is possible to acquire PET images using a conventional dual-head gamma camera fitted with a coincidence detector.
=== Tertiary lymphoid organs === Tertiary lymphoid organs (TLOs) are abnormal lymph node-like structures that form in peripheral tissues at sites of chronic inflammation, such as chronic infection, transplanted organs undergoing graft rejection, some cancers, and autoimmune and autoimmune-related diseases. TLOs are often characterized by CD20+ B cell zone, which is surrounded by CD3+ T cell zone, similar to the lymph follicles in secondary lymphoid organs (SLOs) and are regulated differently from the normal process whereby lymphoid tissues are formed during ontogeny, being dependent on cytokines and hematopoietic cells, but still drain interstitial fluid and transport lymphocytes in response to the same chemical messengers and gradients. Mature TLOs often have an active germinal center, surrounded by a network of follicular dendritic cells (FDCs). Although the specific composition of TLOs may vary, within the T cell compartment, the dominant subset of T cells is CD4+ T follicular helper (TFH) cells, but certain number of CD8+ cytotoxic T cells, CD4+ T helper 1 (TH1) cells, and regulatory T cells (Tregs) can also be found within the T cell zone. The B cell zone contains two main areas. The mantle is located at the periphery and composed of naive immunoglobulin D (IgD)+ B cells surrounding the germinal centre. The latter is defined by the presence of proliferating Ki67+CD23+ B cells and a CD21+ FDC network, as observed in SLOs. TLOs typically contain far fewer lymphocytes, and assume an immune role only when challenged with antigens that result in inflammation.
Use of methamphetamine can result in a stimulant psychosis which may present with a variety of symptoms (e.g., paranoia, hallucinations, delirium, and delusions). A Cochrane Collaboration review on treatment for amphetamine, dextroamphetamine, and methamphetamine use-induced psychosis states that about 5–15% of users fail to recover completely. The same review asserts that, based upon at least one trial, antipsychotic medications effectively resolve the symptoms of acute amphetamine psychosis. Amphetamine psychosis may also develop occasionally as a treatment-emergent side effect.
=== Behavioral evidence === Fossils of the troodonts Mei and Sinornithoides demonstrate that some dinosaurs slept with their heads tucked under their arms. This behavior, which may have helped to keep the head warm, is also characteristic of modern birds. Several deinonychosaur and oviraptorosaur specimens have also been found preserved on top of their nests, likely brooding in a bird-like manner. The ratio between egg volume and body mass of adults among these dinosaurs suggest that the eggs were primarily brooded by the male and that the young were highly precocial, similar to many modern ground-dwelling birds. Some dinosaurs are known to have used gizzard stones like modern birds. These stones are swallowed by animals to aid digestion and break down food and hard fibers once they enter the stomach. When found in association with fossils, gizzard stones are called gastroliths.
== Seat projections == 326 seats are needed for a majority. The party with the most seats is shaded in its colour, and where a party reaches the majority threshold, in bold. The party with the second-most seats is shaded in grey. All polls so far have been conducted excluding the 18 seats in Northern Ireland. Multilevel regression with poststratification (MRP) is the most common methodology for projecting seats nationally. Multiple polling companies have conducted such polling and modelling for the next election, these are tabulated below. Also included are some polls compiled via Political Analysis through Regional and Local Insights System (POLARIS), a novel model created by JL Partners which uses council by-elections to predict election outcomes. POLARIS polls from January 2025 onwards are also combined with a representative survey data, with the data used shifted to reflect the pollster's most recent national polling.

=== mRNA quantification === Levels of mRNA can be quantitatively measured by northern blotting, which provides size and sequence information about the mRNA molecules. A sample of RNA is separated on an agarose gel and hybridized to a radioactively labeled RNA probe that is complementary to the target sequence. The radiolabeled RNA is then detected by an autoradiograph. Because the use of radioactive reagents makes the procedure time-consuming and potentially dangerous, alternative labeling and detection methods, such as digoxigenin and biotin chemistries, have been developed. Perceived disadvantages of Northern blotting are that large quantities of RNA are required and that quantification may not be completely accurate, as it involves measuring band strength in an image of a gel. On the other hand, the additional mRNA size information from the Northern blot allows the discrimination of alternately spliced transcripts. Another approach for measuring mRNA abundance is RT-qPCR. In this technique, reverse transcription is followed by quantitative PCR. Reverse transcription first generates a DNA template from the mRNA; this single-stranded template is called cDNA. The cDNA template is then amplified in the quantitative step, during which the fluorescence emitted by labeled hybridization probes or intercalating dyes changes as the DNA amplification process progresses. With a carefully constructed standard curve, qPCR can produce an absolute measurement of the number of copies of original mRNA, typically in units of copies per nanolitre of homogenized tissue or copies per cell.
=== Composition and selectivity === Condensate components are usually divided into scaffolds, which drive phase separation, and clients, which do not phase separate on their own but can still be recruited into the dense phase. Client recruitment depends on the number of available binding sites as well as the valency and affinity of the client, so changes in scaffold stoichiometry can alter the composition of the condensate. Partitioning is also influenced by physical factors that are distinct from specific binding. Because condensates consist of dense networks of intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs), inserting a molecule restricts the conformational freedom of the surrounding chains, resulting in an entropic penalty that increases with particle size. Calculations combined with coarse-grained modelling show that the free energy of insertion increases with both IDR density and particle size, and becomes dependent on particle surface area once the particle is larger than the network mesh size. At typical IDR concentrations, particles as small as 4 nm in diameter can be almost entirely excluded, with approximately 97% exclusion in the absence of favourable interactions with condensate components.

=== Alcohol dependence === Nalmefene is used in the European Union to reduce alcohol dependence and NICE recommends the use of nalmefene to reduce alcohol consumption in combination with psychological support for people who drink heavily. Based on a meta analysis, the usefulness of nalmefene for alcohol dependence is unclear. Nalmefene, in combination with psychosocial management, may decrease the amount of alcohol drunk by people who are alcohol dependent. The medication may also be taken "as needed", when a person feels the urge to consume alcohol.
== Diagnosis == It is important to consider a potential cardiovascular cause of hoarseness particularly in patients with progressive disease. Once suspected, performing a laryngoscopy is the first step in identifying damage to the left recurrent laryngeal nerve. Examination includes:
One clinical study reported reductions in selected periodontal pathogens following the LANAP protocol compared with scaling and root planing; the clinical significance of microbiologic changes relative to long-term clinical outcomes remains a subject of ongoing study and debate in the literature.
In addition, aminoethoxyvinyl glycine and methoxyvinyl glycine have been shown to inhibit both shake and static cultures. Production of mycotoxins or secondary metabolites by P. digitatum has not been observed, although this species has been shown to be toxic to both shrimp and chicken embryos. With respect to fungicidal tolerance, there are known strains of P. digitatum resistant to various commonly used fungicides. Reports have been made concerning fungicides thiabendazole, benomyl, imazalil, and sodium-o-phenylphenate, as well as the fungistatic agent biphenyl, with no prior treatment required in the latter case. The mechanism of P. digitatum resistance to imazalil is suggested to lie in the over-expression of the sterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51) protein, caused by a 199 base-pair insertion into the promoter region of the CYP51 gene, and/or by duplications of the CYP51 gene.
=== Other === The Congress that passed the Taft–Hartley Amendments considered repealing the Norris–La Guardia Act to the extent necessary to permit courts to issue injunctions against strikes violating a no-strike clause, but chose not to do so. The Supreme Court nonetheless held several decades later that the act implicitly gave the courts the power to enjoin such strikes over subjects that would be subject to final and binding arbitration under a collective bargaining agreement. Finally, the act imposed a number of procedural and substantive standards that unions and employers must meet before they may use employer funds to provide pensions and other employee benefit to unionized employees. Congress has since passed more extensive protections for workers and employee benefit plans as part of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act ("ERISA").

Semax is based on the ACTH(4-10) fragment, a seven-amino-acid segment of adrenocorticotropic hormone. The synthetic peptide retains the core sequence while removing regions associated with endocrine activity. This modification is intended to isolate effects on the nervous system.
It is registered for clinical use in Russia and a few other countries, typically as a nasal drop formulation. It does not hold approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration or the European Medicines Agency. Outside those markets it is generally handled as a research chemical.
The compound was developed in Moscow and the earliest studies were conducted there, so the primary literature is largely in Russian-language journals. Translation and indexing have been incomplete, which limits access for outside researchers. Independent groups have since published some work, but the total volume remains modest.
It is described as a synthetic analogue of the ACTH(4–10) fragment, a short segment of adrenocorticotropic hormone. Its sequence differs from that fragment and includes two proline residues, which influence stability and behaviour in solution.
